Theeng Vang and the Global Anthems of Modern Hmong Hip-Hop

The global Hmong diaspora is experiencing a massive wave of cultural reclamation, and it is being driven by two powerful forces: music and textiles. At the absolute forefront of this movement is Theeng Vang, an independent Hmong rapper, singer, songwriter, and music producer based out of Mù Cang Chải and Hanoi, Vietnam. By aggressively blending heavy digital urban hip-hop beats with traditional Hmong instrumentation, Theeng Vang has built a unique sonic identity that bridges generational gaps.

His standout 2025 single, "Nkauj Hmoob Thoob Ntuj" (translated as "Hmong Girls Around the World"), has quickly become a defining anthem for the community. It serves as a beautiful, rhythmic tribute to the beauty, resilience, and enduring heritage of Hmong women scattered across the globe.

Long ago, there lived two Village Elders. One was the Village Elder of the lower village, and one was the Village Elder of the upper village. Each of them had a wife. As time went on, each of their two wives became pregnant with a child! One morning, just as the roosters crowed clear and bright, both wives gave birth to baby boys at the exact same moment. The child of the upper Village Elder had a golden tongue. The child of the lower Village Elder had a silver tongue!

Then the two Village Elders came together to speak with one another, saying: "Oh! Why is it that our two children were born unlike anyone else in the land? From now on, as the two fathers, we must never let these two children see each other."

Nuj Sis Loob, Muam Nkauj Ntsum & Muam Nkauj See

Long, long ago in the ancient times, a husband and wife gave birth to a baby boy. They named him Nuj Sis Loob.

As Sis Loob grew into a young man, whatever he sought to learn, he mastered. He learned the wedding songs and the funeral chants completely. He was exceptionally skilled at playing the qeej.

Far away in the upper regions of China (Ntuj Sua Teb Tom Peg) lived a young maiden named Muam Nkauj See. Meanwhile, Sis Loob lived in the lower regions of China (Ntuj Sua Teb Tom Taug). Up in the upper lands, a family came to ask for Muam Nkauj See’s hand in marriage. Her parents and brothers were deeply pleased and completed the marriage arrangements.

Then, Ntxawm Nkauj See said to them:

"Oh! No matter what, you are already giving me away to them. Therefore, go and call Nuj Sis Loob from the lower regions to come play the qeej and perform the sending-off songs for my wedding. Only then will I go and live my life. If you cannot go and secure Nuj Sis Loob to play the qeej for my wedding send-off, even if I go, I will absolutely not live out my life!"

The Fairy of the Plumeria

This story was originally published here in 2011, now updated with new artwork in 2026.

Chapter 1: The Flower Beyond the Stars

In the beginning, when Heaven and Earth were still young, there was a secret garden hidden far beyond the Milky Way, a place no mortal had ever seen and no earthly traveler could ever reach. The garden floated between the celestial clouds and the endless sea of stars, where silver moonlight rested upon the leaves and the air carried the delicate fragrance of flowers that bloomed only beneath the heavens. Among all the blossoms that grew there, however, one plumeria was unlike any other. Its petals were white at the edges but blushed with the soft colors of dawn—pale pink, warm gold, and the faintest shade of lavender—and its fragrance drifted through the celestial realm like a sweet spring breeze.

For countless years, the flower remained closed, waiting beneath the stars. Then, one night, when the heavens were unusually still, a strange light gathered around it. A cool breeze swept through the garden, stirring the leaves and causing the celestial flowers to bow gently upon their stems. The plumeria trembled, and one by one, its luminous petals began to unfold. A warm golden glow spilled from its center, brighter than moonlight yet softer than the sun, until a tiny figure emerged from within the blossom.

She was a fairy, beautiful beyond anything the celestial spirits had ever seen. Her skin glowed softly beneath the starlight, her long hair shimmered like threads of midnight, and her delicate wings were filled with colors that seemed to change whenever she moved. When she fluttered them for the first time, thousands of tiny sparks scattered through the air like fireflies. She laughed with delight, and the sound echoed through the secret garden like the ringing of silver bells.

The fairy had been born from the light of the celestial realm, and within her was a rare power unlike that of any other fairy. Whenever she flew through Heaven, her wings left a brilliant trail of rainbow light behind her, and wherever she went, the stars seemed to shine a little brighter.

At first, the celestial spirits adored her. She was curious, playful, and full of wonder, and the heavens seemed to delight in watching her discover the world around her. But as the years passed, her extraordinary gifts began to change her. The more powerful she became, the more she believed herself to be above everyone else. She flew wherever she pleased, disturbed the clouds, scattered celestial flowers, frightened heavenly creatures, and caused mischief throughout both Fairyland and Heaven. Whenever anyone tried to correct her, she simply laughed and flew away, certain that no one could truly punish her.
